My Little Angels
I had originally blogged this on Nov 2 2010 but I really wanted to include these in my 365. As I was not very motivated today and I did choose “love” or it chose me… I thought it would be the day for them as I do love them!
In high school, (when I went) I had a very good friend. Derek, a very talented artist and a very happy bubbly person. In fact he designed the tattoo I have around my ankle. Rambling here.... His mother Carol was a really cool person. She was independent and strong. She had different views of things than the “normal” person. I really really liked her. She had these little cards then, every time anyone would arrive in her house they were directed to “take a card”. These lovely little cards just have one word on them. All good things, very positive. I had never seen them before. It was something I looked forward to when I went to see Carol.
Anyway... Carol wasn’t well and had to visit the hospital and sadly she didn’t make it back home. She was not old but I guess for whatever reason her time was up. I always remembered her and many of her stories and of course... the angel cards.
A few years after she died I found the angel cards at some odd shop and had to have them. I loved them and took very special care of them (most of the time). I had a very pretty antique cut glass dish they lived in. Sometimes I might take them out to a coffee shop that I would spend hours in reading some book or doing a crossword puzzle or maybe even having a chat with someone (good story there but for another day). As I said I was careful but.... There is ALWAYS a but, some bigger than others. This was a big one... a big but and it was me!
The cards were always a hit and, anyone that got near them just had to take one and most often they would look at it, ponder and smile... “OK, I get it”
I worked at the Japanese Gardens at this time and was happy with my job (even at 7:30A.M. when I had to be there) I was a good worker and did my job well (only boasting a tiny bit!) It was about a 10 or 15 minute drive to work... down the highway at about 65mph most of the way (you can see this one coming right?)
I also had an old truck, a 1970 Chevy, the same one from the “learning to drive a standard” blog.
Ok so,one evening upon leaving the coffee place I, like a fool, just sat the dish with the angel cards in it on the tool box on the back of the truck... and FORGOT them! Not only did I forget them but I forgot them till the next night.... late.
I knew when I realized there was NO chance for them to be there but I went in search to find the remaining survivors, if any, with my flashlight. The bowl was there and I could see scattered little cards in the bed of the truck. I picked up what I found and went inside to assess the damage.
I felt so bad. I had treasured them so very much and they had given me pleasure and guidance and joy. I felt I had even let Carol down too. I don’t know why but I did.
15 minute drive to work that morning and another on the way home after work and... Here it comes...
Not one was missing! Not ONE! 72 little angels and not one flew away!
These are not the same ones I had then… somewhere in many moves they were at last lost. There are 92 cards now instead of 72.
