The photo has nothing at all to do with this photo but I like the pic and wanted to use it! I take too many photos with my cell phone from the car while driving (I know I shouldn’t do that!) I love the shadow of Annie!
This is a true story…
When I was a kid I had to stay by myself a lot. My mom lived in another house and I lived with my dad that was a truck driver and gone most of the time… it wasn’t too bad as my grandparents were only about 2 miles away if I needed anything I could ring them. Not too much though or I would get in trouble with my mom! My mom by the way is crazy! I guess she is bipolar or something like that but never got any help or wanted it, but trust me when I say she is crazy. I'm not being mean but she is crazy! I don’t talk to my mom or my dad either… for different reasons. I don’t have any problem with that… my parents were really my grandparents! That makes me happy!
Anyway I ramble…
When I was about 11 or 12 I was staying at the trailer… I had probably been there a 2 or 3 nights and days on my own… I would go to my grandparents some days in the summer but my mom didn’t let my stay all night very often. Even though she was living somewhere else I still was supposed to do what she said!
So this day I was home about 10:30 in the morning… I was in bed watching TV something very intellectual like the munsters or something! And the dogs started to bark. We had three dogs… Rosy, Smokey, and Big Puppy (I know I was really bad with animal names as a child!) and they were barking… now when I say we lived in the country it wasn’t like 10 miles to the next neighbour or anything but it wasn’t in walking distance of anything…
So they barked and barked and I could hear a car outside in the drive way. The car engine stopped and I had no idea who it was. It wasn’t anyone I knew the way the dogs barked. With great caution and sure not to move the curtains I tried to have a look… a pickup truck… that I would later describe to a sheriff that was going to be as bad as the person in the truck… but no one was in it! Then… knock knock knock!!! I was frozen… I didn’t know this truck and I didn’t know this person and no one ever knocks on your door in the country! If someone did they would yell at you “hey are you home?”
Then KNOCK!!!! Pound pound!! Thundering! But no one calling out… all I could do was wait till they left. I couldn’t say hello and let them know I was in there alone I didn’t know them. I didn’t know what else to do but wait… they stopped knocking finally and I looked out the window… a short man getting into his truck… whew!
I figured he was leaving but a couple of minutes later I realized it was still quiet and thought he must have been gone by now! I looked out expecting to see nothing but saw the truck still there and no short man! I was horrified! About the time it took to register in my head and be horrified I heard something… banging... loud! My dad left a gun well a rifle at the house with me”in case I ever needed it”
I needed it!
I grabbed it on the way to my dad’s room where I heard the pounding, it was in a hiding place and took a few seconds to get to. I got to it and knew what to do… pull this back and get one round in the barrel… done.
I turned the corner into my dad’s room rifle in hand pointed straight ahead and started screaming “get out! Get out!” as loud as I could! He was most of the way in the house… time was slow motion for sure here! I swear it felt like forever! Even my memory is in slow motion!
He was most of the way in the house and looked up at me with what I have to say is probably the single most surprised look on a person’s face I will ever see! He had NO idea I was there! And was not intending on staying any longer! I don’t blame him! A crazed 11 year old with a gun doesn’t sound to appealing to me either!
I can remember he looked at me and I was looking at him and oh fuck was it just totally the scariest thing ever for just a second! I didn’t know what he was going to do? Would he run or would he lunge at me… I didn’t know how much in the house he was! So for a second…. It was insane!
Then…. Out the window he went! He must have jumped over the two fences that separated him from the get away truck like Nijinsky! Short he was and also very fast! By the time I walked from my dad’s room to my room where the window was to look out… all there was was dust in the wind! He was in his truck and out of the drive way and he wasn’t looking back!
I called the sheriff, we were county not city. No 911 then.
A car was sent…
I have to go back a tiny bit here…. My grandparents two miles away had not hung the phone up right! I had tried an emergency break through but no luck… off the hook it was! What luck was that? So I had no way to get in touch with them.
The car… arrived in no hurry and wouldn’t even bother to get out of the car… he sat in his car and honked. Remember I had called them to report a break-in and I said I was 11 or 12 and home alone! He honked till I came out of the house… I took the rifle with me I was really mad at him and really scared still too! He was some bastard! Asked me what happened you know whatever they have to write down and report… all from the comfort of his car! Just before he left he did get out once and look at the window the guy had pried open but! It was so bad that I told about the phone and my grandparents and told him where they lived… I asked him to take me to their house that I didn’t want to stay in the house alone. He wouldn’t take me… instead he said he would stop at the house and tell them to come and get me… he did and I was surprised…
Forgot to add one last thing... When my dad got home and we had a look at the window and all... My dad also found one single ripped button on the floor in his room just inside the window... Close call!
I have decided to do a Project 365! Here is just a bit of info behind every pic.
I have an Etsy shop now! Check it out here!!!!
